Alvarez, Kirkland make weight; Gomez-Soto off
- Updated: May 8, 2015
Earlier today in Houston, the final weigh-in took place for Saturday night’s junior middleweight clash between Canelo Alvarez and James Kirkland.
With the fight being at a contracted catchweight of 155, both fighters came in at 154.5, as both men looked lean and cut.
The story of the day however was Frankie Gomez, who was scheduled to face Humberto Soto in the co-feature, but was called off by Golden Boy after Gomez failed to make weight.
Gomez blew off the final press conference on Thursday as there were rumors that he was too heavy and today, the rumors turned out to be true as Gomez came in at 147.5 pounds, while Soto weighed 142.5. The contracted weight was 141 pounds and Soto was allowed to come in a little over in order to get closer to Gomez’ weight. However, Gomez could not shed 2.5 pounds in order to make 145 pounds, which the two camps agreed upon afterward and the fight was canceled.
HBO will only televise Alvarez vs. Kirkland live from Minute Maid Park, along with the replay of Floyd Mayweather’s unanimous decision win over Manny Pacquiao.
