Fresh off the huge news that Floyd Mayweather will finally meet Manny Pacquiao on May 2 in Las Vegas, the junior middleweight showdown between Canelo Alvarez and James Kirkland has officially moved to May 9, according to Oscar De La Hoya.
HBO also announced the change of date during the telecast for the Golovkin-Murray middleweight title bout in Monte Carlo.
De La Hoya added that the fight will take place at Minute Maid Park in Houston.
“The week around Cinco de Mayo will be the biggest in years for boxing, bridging the present and the future as the three biggest stars in the sport all step into the ring in just a seven-day period. It is my hope and belief that this May week will usher in a new era of our sport, one in which we as a sport give fans what they want, the best facing the best,” added De La Hoya.
Alvarez and Kirkland were tentatively scheduled to compete on May 2, but with Mayweather-Pacquiao now taking that date, it was obvious that Golden Boy and HBO would shift it to a later date.
