Jay Z’s new boxing promotional venture appears to have landed it’s biggest client.
After a long, ugly court battle with Goossen Tutor Promotions, super middleweight kingpin Andre Ward has finally parted ways with the company and decided to join Roc Nation Sports.
“We have signed Andre Ward and it’s something we’re very excited about,” David Itskowitch, chief operating officer of Roc Nation Sports’ boxing division, told ESPN.com. “It’s just the beginning for us but it’s a game-changer. He’s one of the best fighters in the world. Everything is coming together for us. On the same day we are having our first event, at Madison Square Garden, we are announcing our first really huge signing.”
Despite having only two fights in the past three years, Ward (27-0, 14 KO) is still heavily considered perhaps the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world outside of Floyd Mayweather. There is no word on when the Oakland native will make his Roc Nation debut, but the two sides will meet again to discuss his next fight.
“We’re going to sit down and talk about when he will specifically fight and the level of opponent he will fight,” Itskowitch said. “He’s been out of the ring for a while. We’ll come up with names and come up with a date but we’re excited to give him the opportunity to show he’s one of the best in the world.”
Ward’s last bout came in November of 2013, a one-sided domination of previously undefeated Edwin Rodriguez. He joins a stable of star athletes represented by Roc Nation which includes the NFL’s Dez Bryant, MLB’s Robinson Cano and NBA’s Kevin Durant.
