Mayweather calls out Pacquiao for May 2
- Updated: December 12, 2014
Floyd Mayweather, who is promoting the junior middleweight scrap between Ishe Smith and Erislandy Lara was interviewed by Showtime analyst Steve Farhood prior to the main event, in which he addressed the demand from the public for a fight against Manny Pacquiao.
“Absolutely, I would love to fight Manny Pacquiao,” declared Pacquiao, when asked if he wanted the fight.
Mayweather then went on a rant about why the fight didn’t happen years ago, stating that Pacquiao didn’t want to undergo random blood and urine testing and then proclaimed that it was Bob Arum who was blocking the fight from happening.
“Now he’s [Pacquiao] in a tight situation; he’s lost to Marquez, to Bradley, his PPV numbers are extremely low, so he’s desperate,” added Mayweather.
According to Mayweather, Pacquiao’s side is looking for similar money to what was initially offered, but Floyd doesn’t feel he deserves that kind of money at this point in time.
“Manny Pacquiao, Bob Arum, you guys have been ducking us for years. We’re tired of you guys fooling the public, fooling the critics. Before we tried to make the fight happen and you guys didn’t want to take random blood and urine testing,” added Mayweather. “So that’s why the fight didn’t happen. Then I offered you $40 million and you didn’t want to make the fight happen. Then you lost twice and now you’re coming back begging for the same money. That’s not going to happen.”
To add to the difficulties, Floyd said that the fight would have to be on Showtime PPV, where he of course is under contract. Pacquiao meanwhile, is under contract with HBO, so a joint PPV would need to be put together, as was the case when Lennox Lewis fought Mike Tyson.
“It’s a little bit of everything that makes me want this fight because he’s not on my level. The fans would love to see the fight and of course I want to go out with a bang. So let’s make this fight happen.
“Let’s make this fight for the people, for the fans. Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao May 2, Cinco de Mayweather.”
Clearly there are still many obstacles to this fight ever taking place, but time is running out.
