Ringside With Raymundo: ‘The GGG Effect’
- Updated: October 10, 2014
A press release was sent out not to long before ticket sales started for ‘Mexican Style’, a middleweight throw down to feature the ever more popular Gennady Golovkin against Marco Antonio Rubio, that ticket sales were moving swiftly.
Then, a press release was sent out that the Stub Hub Center would be, for the first time, offering ‘standing room only’ tickets.
Even more appalling was that was on the heels of rumors that bleachers were somehow going to be set up at the Fight of the Year maker venue outside of Los Angeles, California.
Yup, that’s the ever rising popularity factor kicking in for the ‘good boy’ who goes by ‘GGG’.
This marks the first California fight for the Kazakhstan native who trains in the high altitude of the Big Bear mountains.
Even though Golovkin has yet to throw punches for pay in the California sunshine, he sure seemed ear when talking to the press this week.
“While they see me fight on HBO in New York City, they also always wanted to know when I would be fighting in Los Angeles. The StubHub Center I’ve been to many times for other fights and each time, the support from the fans increases. Also, when I go into Los Angeles for other events, fans are very supportive as well.”
When GGG was last seen in this venue, at the Shawn Porter/Kell Brook welterweight title fight, the boxer was mobbed like Johnny Depp at, well, anywhere.
By the time it came for his exit on that night following Brook lifting the title from Porter, it seemed as if it were ‘Gennady Obama’ was leaving the building as he was escorted by multiple security members through an endless hurdle of well-wishers and photo-op/autograph seekers.
This shows that the Kazak is now transitioning from what was a ‘cult like’, mid-sized following in the previous years to now a national following.
It is a great thing that Golovkin is taking his talents to the West Coast, and GGG promises to deliver.
“So this fight against Marco Antonio Rubio is a gift to all my fans here in Southern California, everyone who kept asking about fighting here and who have been so supportive. I’m very happy to be fighting on Oct. 18 at the StubHub Center and promise a great show to those in attendance and those watching at home on HBO.”
