Canelo-Cotto fight is a no-go

During the press conference earlier today in Las Vegas to announce the signing of David Lemieux, Oscar De La Hoya fielded questions about a possible Canelo Alvarez/Miguel Cotto May 2 bout, and the fight was confirmed as scrapped.

“He’s [Canelo] still fighting May 2,” said De La Hoya.

“There’s several opponents so it depends what opponent we choose, then we’ll decide if it’s pay-per-view or HBO.

Media chatter has been that IBF titlist Cornelius Bundrage may be in line to face Alvarez.

Alvarez was adamant on fighting on May 2 and De La Hoya stated there is only one fight that would bump Canelo from getting what he wished: A much discussed Floyd Mayweather/Manny Pacquiao showdown.

“If Mayweather-Pacquiao happens then that’s the only fight that out of respect for the fans, that we will move from (May 2). But if Mayweather fights Cotto or Amir (Khan) then we’re going. We would have to,” De La Hoya said.

Damn, what a bummer. Was easily one of my most anticipated fights of 2015. Let’s hope a fall bout can still be made.
