In a fight whose ebb and flow created an emotional rollercoaster, Jamie Conlan earned the Commonwealth junior lightweight title from Anthony Nelson in a Fight of the Year candidate.
The two engaged in a war that got off to a fast start, as Nelson and Conlan tore into each other in the first round, punctuated by a knockdown from Conlan, who himself had a bad cut over his left eye. In the second round, the slugfest continued to the delight of the frenzied crowd at the Copper Box Arena.
In the third round, it was Conlan who went down after Nelson managed to land some thudding blows. Then in the fifth round, Conlan hurt Nelson and sent him to the canvas for the second time, yet somehow, Nelson recovered and finished the round stronger – Nelson began to take over the fight, but it would only last a few rounds.
Conlan then dropped Nelson with a crushing left hook to the body in the eighth, that left his opponent unable to continue.
