After a brief sabbatical, former multi divisional champion turned promoter, Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya was on hand at Plaza Olvera yesterday to celebrate what is sure to become the biggest boxing event of this year, dubbed “Star Power,” and to greet and mingle with fans.

Scheduled for September 17, “Star Power” will be televised by HBO PPV from two different locations:  Las Vegas and Los Angeles. In the main event from MGM Grand in Las Vegas, WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz will defend his title against Floyd Money Mayweather Jr.

In a co-feature from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, rising young star from Mexico, Saul Canelo Alvarez will defend his WBC super welterweight crown against Alfonso Gomez. Back in Las Vegas, the legendary Erick Morales will attempt to win a vacant WBC light welterweight belt , while opening up the telecast, rising light welterweight prospect from Las Vegas, Jessie Vargas will face off against battle tested Josesito Lopez.

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya brought two of his rising stars, Victor Ortiz and Canelo Alvarez to help him with the festivities. Since the new Oscar does not drink anymore, how do you celebrate? You party and sing. All three stars, Oscar, Victor and Canelo were on the stage singing Mexican ballads for fans that cheered wildly and sang along. It was quite a party.

Young WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz brought his young brother to the stage to sing together. Ortiz is tired of talking about the fight with Floyd. “The training will show its perfectionism, if that’s even a word” said Victor smiling, “on September 17th.” He promised to knockout big mouth Floyd Mayweather and end all the talk.

Following a strenuous camp in Big Bear, the red-headed phenom from Mexico, ‘Canelo’ Alvarez looked in tremendous shape. He was in high spirits. The young star even showed me how to operate a camera so that I could take a picture with him and a young lady fan. Canelo promised to show what he learned in camp on September 17 against Alfonso Gomez. Alvarez wowed to put on a show for the fans in Los Angeles.

The party will move on to Universal City back lot on Monday night where all the contestants, including Floyd Mayweather are expected to attend.

After that it’s on to Las Vegas.
