The scheduled June 25 clash between former three-division champ Abner Mares and featherweight titlist Jesus Cuellar has been canceled due to an undisclosed medical condition that prevented Mares from getting licensed by the New York State Athletic Commission.
The fight was scheduled for the Premier Boxing Champions card next week in Brooklyn and according to Lou DiBella, will be replaced on the CBS telecast.
“Abner’s condition is in no way life-threatening, nor was it revealed in a blood or urine test; there was no use of any drugs, including PEDs or other banned substances.
“In honoring Abner’s right to medical confidentiality, no further information will be released on this situation unless he chooses,” read a statement from DiBella Entertainment.
According to ESPN however, it is believed that Mares failed two eye exams administered by the NYSAC causing further concern based on his previous eye injury (detached retina). Showtime will make a separate announcement in the coming days about the fight that will replace Mares-Cuellar.
