On Wednesday night’s ¬†Premier Boxing Champions card on ESPN, former titlist Devon Alexander (26-4, 14 KOs) lost a unanimous decision to Aaron Martinez (20-4-1, 4 KOs) in quite the upset.

Martinez, who came in as a virtual unknown, had some difficulties early on against Alexander who boxed well and established a rhythm, but as the fight wore on, Martinez picked up the pace and began picking up rounds.  Alexander appeared over-confident as he let Martinez back into the fight and after ten rounds, Martinez came away with the win with scores of 96-94, 97-93 and 97-93.

“I’m the heavier guy. I’ve always fought at 147 lbs. This is my natural weight and I sparred against much bigger guys during the last few weeks of training camp,” said Martinez after the fight. “I was facing fast 180 lbs fighters in camp to get ready for this.

“We followed our game plan tonight. I give (Alexander) props for standing in there with me.”

Alexander was clearly disappointed in his performance, noting that he couldn’t get his shots off but said he would come back from the loss.

“Consecutive losses are tough, but I’m not easily discouraged. I just need to regroup and then we’ll see what’s next. I’m still considered one of the best.”
