The previous pay per view buy record for a boxing match has officially now fallen.

The record of 2.48 million buys set in 2007 with the Floyd Mayweather/Oscar De La Hoya match was eclipsed with this month’s Floyd Mayweather/Manny Pacquiao mega bout on May 2, as expected.

A number of 3 million was anticipated, and the fight, although devoid of much back and forth action, exceeded PPV buy expectations and is projected to have sold 4.4 million buys.

In addition to the PPV record, another record was set as the total live gate reached $71 million, beating the previous record set in 2013 with the Floyd Mayweather/Saul Alvarez bout.

Yet another record was set by the May 2 bout as 46,000 closed circuit tickets were sold at the MGM properties that housed the fight in Las Vegas.  It was also noted over 5,000 locations such as bars and restaurants showed the fight nationwide, and the fight was distributed to 175 countries worldwide.

It is expected that the fight will have generated over $500 million in gross worldwide receipts.
