During the post-fight press conference, Floyd Mayweather, who had just finished unifying the 147-pound titles with a unanimous decision win over Manny Pacquiao, said he would relinquish his titles on Monday.

The announcement came out of nowhere and was done very as-a-matter-of-fact by Mayweather, who added that his final bout in September would be a non-title fight, though he says it would still be a 12-rounder.

Mayweather (48-0) holds the WBC, WBA and WBO welterweight titles.

After being pressed about why he would give up the titles so soon, Mayweather stepped back and said he may end up doing it in a few weeks if not by Monday.

“I don’t know if it will be Monday or maybe a couple weeks,” Mayweather said. “I’ll talk to my team and see what we need to do.”

Mayweather reiterated that he doesn’t need the belts anymore and that he thinks other fighters should have a chance at earning his belts.

“Other fighters need a chance. Give other fighters a chance. I’m not greedy.”

Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions added, “We’ve been in the sport almost 20 years. There are young, up-and-coming fighters. It’s about giving other guys opportunities. He’s accomplished everything in the sport.”

The real reason why he’s relinguishing all the belts is that he doesn’t want to go through mandatory defence as required by the organizations. He’s too big for that. Its all about the money for him , to hell with the sport.
