Abraham retains title over Smith

Arthur Abraham retained his WBO 168-pound title over the weekend by outpointing Paul Smith in Kiel, Germany.
“It was a tough fight,” said Abraham. “Paul Smith was by no means an easy opponent and he made me work hard for the win. I was pleased with my performance. I feel that I have proved to myself, to my coach Ulli Wegner and to my fans that I still have what it takes. I’m not in decline and I look forward to more successful defenses of my WBO title.”
The two engaged in an action-packed affair but it was Abraham who was landing the harder punches, swaying the judges’ decision.
Scores were 117-111, 117-111 and 119-109 for Abraham, who improved to 41-4 (28 KOs).
“I love coming here,” Abraham said. “It was a great fight. We trained hard. I worked a lot with my jab today.”
Smith’s record dropped to 35-4 (20 KOs) but he and his team were quickly calling for a rematch, which Abraham said he would consider.
“Of course I would fight Paul again,” Abraham. “I’m sure it would be another exciting fight. However the circumstances would need to be right. At the moment the most interesting fight for me would be Sturm or Stieglitz.”
