Andre Ward withdraws from Cotto-Canelo undercard
- Updated: November 4, 2015
Andre Ward will not be a part of the November 21 Cotto vs. Canelo pay-per-view.
The 31-year-old Oakland native was set to co-headline the card. Ward announced his withdrawal from his light heavyweight debut against Alexander Brand due to inflammation in his right knee.
“I’m extremely disappointed that I’m missing this opportunity on November 21, but at the same time, I’m encouraged,” Ward said. “Anytime I have had a minor or major setback in my career, by the Grace of God, I’ve come back stronger and this will be no different. I’m looking forward to a big 2016. Thank you to all my fans for your support and patience.”
Ward will most likely headline a card of his own on HBO in early 2016. The plan is still for Ward to eventually square off with light heavyweight kingpin Sergey Kovalev some time in late 2016.
No announcement has been made on a potential replacement fight for the Cotto vs. Canelo pay-per-view portion of the card.
