Brook to challenge Golovkin on September 10
Welterweight titlist Kell Brook will be making the leap to middleweight to challenge 160-pound champ Gennady Golovkin on September 10 at the O2 in London on HBO.
“I’m very excited to be fighting in front of the great British boxing fans and promise another ‘Big Drama Show’ against undefeated Kell Brook,” said Golovkin. “I give him much respect for taking this fight.”
Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs), who has been unable to get fighters like Canelo Alvarez and Chris Eubank Jr. to sign on to fight, will head to the UK for the first time in his career to defend his title.
Said Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, “We’re very excited to have Gennady fight for the first time in the UK. We have a great deal of respect for Kell Brook for stepping up and facing Gennady when so many have been reluctant to do so.”
“We’ve tried to come to the UK before for fights with Carl Froch, Billy Jo Saunders and Chris Eubank Jr. but Kell Brook is the first to accept the challenge.”
Brook (36-0, 25 KOs), who will remain IBF titlist at welterweight, was unable to secure a fight with Jessie Vargas but is ecstatic at the opportunity to fight for a middleweight belt.
“When this fight got offered to me I accepted within minutes and I can’t wait. Everyone knows I’m a huge welterweight and I know I will carry my speed and accuracy and even more power through the weights. This is the ultimate fight, one of the biggest international fights the country has seen in many years – you have seen some huge names run from GGG but I’m running to him. I’m a Special fighter and I will show the World on September 10.”
The fight will not require a catchweight, as it will be fought at 160 pounds.
