Canelo out until 2015 with ankle injury
- Updated: October 6, 2014
Canelo Alvarez was expected to return to the ring on Dec. 6, but will now be sidelined until 2015, as a persistent ankle injury has forced him to sit out the rest of the year, according to Golden Boy.
Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) had recently announced, alongside with Oscar De La Hoya, a new multi-fight agreement with HBO and was unofficially set to face Joshua Clottey in his first fight back with the network, but may now be on the shelf until a potential middleweight title clash against Miguel Cotto.
No word on whether or not Golden Boy will move forward with their planned December card, but the promotion says they will “review their options” for that date.
Canelo informed his fans via Twitter that he’ll be rehabbing his ankle for five weeks and says he expects to return to the ring in May.
One of the major reasons Alvarez decided to go back to HBO was to have the opportunity to fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend, and Mexican Independence Day weekend, so it appears fans will see him back on May 2.
