Cotto, Canelo agree on catchweight
- Updated: July 1, 2015
After Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez took care of business in their most recent fights, the talk turned to their potential showdown in the fall, in what is easily the most highly anticipated fight of the second half of 2015.
Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) knocked out Daniel Geale in June while Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) stopped James Kirkland in May and negotiations have been ongoing ever since. Now, according to ESPN, the catchweight has apparently been agreed upon, with 155 pounds being the max weight that the two could come in at for their middleweight title clash.
To put that in perspective, though allowed to weigh 160 pounds at middleweight, Cotto has weighed at or below 155 in his recent fights, while Alvarez generally comes in at around the 154-pound limit of junior middleweight, which means neither fighter should have any advantage.
The two likely dates according to ESPN are Nov. 7 or Nov. 21, either in Las Vegas, Brooklyn or New York City.
