In the main event of HBO’s Boxing After Dark on Saturday night, David Lemieux (33-2, 31 KOs) and Gabriel Rosado (21-9, 13 KOs) put on a thrilling middleweight scrap in front of 6,532 fans at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

It was a competitive match-up that saw Lemieux nearly take out Rosado early in the fight, before the Puerto Rican fighter began to get himself back into the contest.

Lemieux, Montreal, was looking to land heavy shots from the start, and with 31 knockouts in his 33 wins, there’s no question he posses lights-out power.  In the third round, Lemieux scored a knockdown of Rosado, who didn’t see overly hurt, but was caught off balance. However, Lemieux fired off hard punches round after round and the power shots began to take their toll on Rosado’s face.

Rosado meanwhile, weathered the storm in the fourth and fifth rounds, finally unloading his own counter-punching attack, that got the attention of Lemieux, who had to slow down his pace to deal with the oncoming blows.

“I responded to the test well, my preparation has been a lot different.,” said Lemieux. “I know he wanted to take me into deep waters but we have been practicing on explosiveness from the first part of the fight all the way to the end.”

In the later rounds though, Rosado’s left eye began to swell badly, leaving him a one-eyed fighter, which Lemieux capitalized on. During a one-sided 10th round, the ringside doctor waved it off at 2:25, after Lemieux was punishing Rosado on the ropes, in what was likely to turn into a KO.

“I wanted to show everyone what I could do. He was better than I thought but I thought we had a great fight and I hope everyone enjoyed it,” said Lemieux. “I feel like I’m as good as anybody in the division and I’m willing to fight anybody. I want to win a world title.”

“He’s a good fighter. In the second round he punched me in my eye and after it puffed up I couldn’t see anything. I kept seeing three of him. It’s just my luck,” said Rosado. “I know I should have started the fight better, if I had taken control earlier I know it would have been different. But I know he’s a good fighter and I take nothing away from him.”
