Diego De La Hoya victorious

Rising contender Diego De La Hoya warred through a badly swelled right eye en route to a workmanlike 10 round effort against veteran Jesus Ruiz from the packed out Belasco Theatre in downtown Los Angeles as the main event of Golden Boy Promotions ‘LA Fight Club’ series.
De La Hoya, (12-0, 7KO) who goes by the nickname ‘The Golden Kid’, won a unanimous nod victory by the scores of 100-90 twice alongside a 99-91 score and picked up the vacant WBC Youth bantamweight title in the process.
The cousin of Hall of Fame fighter Oscar De La Hoya looks to be a solid prospect with the necessary skills to lead to a successful boxing career.
Fan favorite Christian ‘Chimpa’ Gonzalez knocked down and eventually stopped late substitute Luis Lizarraga in the debut of the fight series on Estrella TV.
Gonzalez, (11-0, 10KO) followed up well with his left hand in the second frame, which lead to a corner stoppage after a monster left hook downed Lizarraga. The Merida, Mexico native gamely got up and beat the count, yet his corner entered the ring and called a halt to the proceedings.
“We were working on throwing the left hook, so I felt comfortable throwing it.”
Brazilian Everton Lopes, (4-0, 1KO) looked good early, but was dropped twice and at times found himself out of position and not effective in the later rounds, yet still managed to score a majority decision on the judges’ cards as he faced Omar Tienda (13-1, 8KO).
Rafael Gramajo faced Adrian Rodriguez in a rugged, grind out type bout as Rodriguez, although limited and boasting a 1-6-1 record heading into the bout, proved willing to trade against Kansas native Gramajo.
Rodriguez fought from the always difficult southpaw stance and gave a good show of himself in certain spots.
Gramajo (5-1-1, 2KO) ended up with the win and gave his opponent his due props.
“This was my first six-round fight. I’d only done four-round fights previously. I had a tough opponent who didn’t back down and we went toe-to-toe. I came to give the fans a show, and I did. Thank you Golden Boy Promotions for this opportunity.”
Super lightweight Jonathan Navarro (2-0, 1 KOs) notched a unanimous decision over Gibran Gutierrez (0-1).
Navarro dropped Gutierrez twice in round one and again with seconds left in the fight.
Ivan ‘Striker’ Delgado notched a win over journeyman Thomas Herrera with a six round decision. Delgado, (7-0, 2KO) landed some heavy bombs that wowed the LA crowd, but was in with a game opponent in Herrera.
“I feel great after that win. He was a tough dude and he took some of my best shots so the key for me was to stay composed and focused and time my shots.”
In attendance: Brandon Rios, Leo Santa Cruz, Wu Tang affiliate Killah Priest (new Planet of the Gods album out now), Oscar De La Hoya, George Lopez.
