Javier Fortuna used his superior skills to outpoint Bryan Vazquez on Friday night and earn his first world title on the undercard of Amir Khan’s welterweight clash against Chris Algieri.
Fortuna (28-0-1, 20 KOs) and Vazquez (34-2, 18 KOs) engaged in quite the battle early on as they tagged each other repeatedly during the first few rounds. However, in the second half of the fight, Fortuna opted to instead use his boxing skills to score points and take over the fight.
“After the fifth round I stopped fighting and started boxing to score points,” Fortuna said.
Fortuna by this point had begun to showboat and pepper Vazquez from the outside while piling on the points round after round. In the end, Fortuna walked away with a belt with scores of 117-111, 117-111 and 116-112.
