Freddie Roach says Pacquiao is way ahead of schedule
As the Los Angeles leg of Manny Pacquaio’s training camp opens this week for his rubber match against Timothy Bradley, trainer Freddie Roach made some comments regarding where his fighter stands at this point, what the 10 time champion can expect in training, and threw a well-placed verbal jab in the direction of Bradley trainer Teddy Atlas.
“We had a strong camp in the Philippines and Manny, as usual, is way ahead of schedule in his conditioning, and very motivated,” said the seven-time Trainer of the Year and 2012 Hall of Fame inductee.
“The real business begins for us on Monday at Wild Card. We have great sparring waiting for Manny.”
Roach fired a shot in Atlas’ direction for a now infamous speech heard throughout the boxing world last year.
Between rounds during his match against Brandon Rios, Atlas was overheard by HBO mics giving his fighter an impassioned speech that later led to a knockout stoppage victory over Rios in the ninth round.
“Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.”
“I know that ESPN announcer [Teddy Atlas] who is coaching Bradley is a good story teller and likes acting,” said Roach.
“Let’s see how well they do when we go off script and hit them with a dose of reality TV… playing firemen isn’t going to protect them from the nuclear assault Manny will be launching.”
Manny Pacquaio vs. Timothy Bradley III takes place on HBO pay-per-view on April 9 live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
