Garcia stops Malignaggi in 9

In the main event of Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN, former unified 140-pound champ Danny Garcia scored a ninth round stoppage over former titlist Paulie Malignaggi at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New  York.

Despite a slow start, Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) slowly wore Malignaggi down with right hands and combinations from the outside.  Malignaggi (33-7, 7 KOs) did use his jab well at times and made himself a moving target, but as the fight wore on, he began to slow down – many times simply attempting to avoid punches than return fire.

Midway through the fight, Garcia opened up two cuts over and under the right eye of Malignaggi, wich only made things worse for “The Magic Man.”  After the eighth, referee Arthur Mercante Jr. warned Malignaggi that he would be looking to possibly stop the fight if he didn’t show him some signs of life, but Garcia continued landing clean punches to the head that forced Mercante’s hand, as he called it off shortly before the end of the round.  At the time of the stoppage, Garcia was ahead on all three scorecards (79-73, 79-73 and 78-74).

After the fight, Malignaggi all but retired, saying that he’d have to think it over but had told himself if he didn’t perform well, that he would call it quits.  He reiterated that he was unable to follow his gameplan and that he had no issues with the stoppage.
