Golovkin, Chocolatito, Canelo nominated for ESPY Awards
- Updated: June 28, 2016
Three boxers top the “Best Fighter” category in the 2016 ESPY Awards. Canelo Alvarez, along with Gennady Golovkin and Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez have been nominated this year, along with two MMA fighters (Conor McGregor and Robbie Lawler)
Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) and Gonzalez (45-0, 38 KOs) have shared the ring in recent fights – they’ve headlined three consecutive cards since May 2015 – and continue to impress in each subsequent outing, both going 3-0 with 3 KOs in 2015. For Golovkin, this marks the second year in a row that he has been nominated for the award.
Canelo’s (47-1-1, 33 KOs) 2015 campaign included wins over James Kirkland and his middleweight title-winning effort against Miguel Cotto.
Fans can vote for either fighter here. The 2016 ESPY’s will air on July 13 on ABC at 8p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT from the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles.
“This is a great honor to be nominated for the second year in a row, “said Golovkin. “Thank you to all my fans.”
Added Gonzalez, “This is a true blessing from God and I’m honored to be nominated with ‘GGG’ and the other great fighters.”
