Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin thrilled a packed to the rafters’ crowd at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, California.
In the HBO televised event, Golovkin, (31-0, 28KO) needed a total of 4:19 total minutes to dispatch of veteran Marco Antonio Rubio after landing a monster right hook that felled Rubio. After making it to his feet, referee Jack Reiss didn’t like what he saw and waved off the bout in the second round.
Golovkin went to work early, as did Rubio, just not as effective in front of the crowd of over 9,323.
“The uppercut — he was very badly hurt and I knew I had him,”
“I was happy he came forward. He fought Mexican style and he tried to hurt me, but my power was too much for him tonight.”
Golovkin, who was a huge fan favorite that was showed with chants of ‘GGG! GGG! GGG!’ again called out veteran Miguel Cotto in hopes for a match against an elite middleweight.
