Golovkin stops Monroe in 6

Tonight Gennady Golovkin retained his middleweight titles and notched his 20th consecutive knockout in front of a Wiley crowd at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

Golovkin, (33-0, 30KO) methodically broke down New York’s Willie Monroe as a crowd of more than 12,000 fans, including celebrities Eddie Murphy and boxers Sergey Kovalev and Laila Ali watched inside the newly revamped former home of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Two knockdowns were scored in frame two as Monroe, who proved to be a game opponent early, found himself in a corner, enabling GGG to tee off.

Monroe (19-2, 6KO) survived the lopsided round and staged a rally in the fourth, landing a three punch combination, but found himself on the canvas again in frame six as the fight was waived off by referee Jack Reiss, who didn’t like what he saw even though Monroe got to his feet.

The Kazakh native landed 45 percent of his shots and out landed Monroe 133 to 87 according to Compubox numbers. He also had a 49 percent power punch count, landing 116 to 56 power shots.

Golovkin addressed the crowd in Spanish and spoke of bouts against Canelo Alvarez or Miguel Cotto later this year.

In the opener, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez broke down Edgar Sosa in a lopsided flyweight bout. Gonzalez (43-0, 37 KO) stopped a game Sosa inside two rounds after flooring him three times in the round..
