Golovkin to face Geale in July title defense
- Updated: June 3, 2014
Gennady Golovkin finally has an opponent for his return to the ring on July 26, as he’ll take on middleweight contender Daniel Geale at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Golovkin (29-0, 26 KOs) was hoping to get in the ring with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for his next bout, but after negotiations went haywire due to the conflict between Chavez Jr.’s team and Top Rank, Golovkin was forced to look elsewhere. Fortunately Geale (30-2, 16 KOs) stepped up to the plate, in an attempt to win a third world title.
“I’m pleased to be making my way back to HBO against Gennady Golovkin, a fighter who everyone thinks is invincible,” said Geale. “A victory will get me back to where I want to be. The people of Australia believe in me and that’s what drives me, my countrymen. I want to show them they have a great champion. On July 26th the world will see me back on top.”
Golovkin meanwhile, has been on a tear as of late, and after making his HBO debut two years ago, will finally get the opportunity to fight at MSG.
“I’m happy to be fighting at Madison Square Garden once again. Fighting in front of the great fans in New York City for the third time is an honor for me and I will train hard to defend my titles in style by giving the fans an exciting show,” said Golovkin. “Daniel Geale has a lot of world championship experience, is a big international name and I look forward to this challenge.”
Tickets to the card will go on sale on June 5 and will be priced at $500, $300, $200, $100, $50 and $25.
HBO will air the fight beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT.
