Golovkin vs Rubio set for Oct. 18
- Updated: August 20, 2014
Gennady Golovkin is going back to ‘Cali’ for his next fight when he faces Marco Antonio Rubio at the StubHub Center.
Golovkin (30-0, 27 KO) will be fighting for the third time in 2014. The first two fights saw ‘GGG’ steamroll through Osumanu Adama in February and Daniel Geale in July.
“I’m very excited to fight in California,” said Golovkin, who trains in Big Bear Lake, California. “I always enjoy attending fights at the StubHub Center and look forward to a Mexican-style fight against Marco Antonio Rubio.”
Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KO) has won six fights in a row since his close decision loss to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. He is currently the interim WBC middleweight champion after knocking out Domenico Spada in 10 rounds back in April. Rubio has been unsuccessful in his two previous title shots, but he is hoping the third time will be the charm.
“I’m excited to fight another world champion,” Rubio said. “I always accept the biggest challenges and without a doubt this will be the greatest of my career. I will show Golovkin a real Mexican style fight on Oct. 18th.”
Golovkin vs Rubio will take place at the StubHub Center in Carson, California on October 18 and will be broadcast live at 10 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
