Guerrero Outhustles Berto in a Slugfest
- Updated: November 25, 2012
On Saturday night from Ontario, Calif., interim WBC welterweight titlist Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) scored one of his biggest wins to date, with a unanimous decision victory over former two-time welterweight beltholder Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KOs) in the main event of HBO World Championship Boxing.
It was a fight that almost appeared over before it really got started as Guerrero stunned Berto in the opening round and sent him to the canvas after a barrage of punches. Berto managed to get up and shook it off, before exchanging punches with Guerrero to close the round. In the second, Guerrero landed a straight left to the right eye of Berto that had him in serious trouble, as Berto was not only hurt, but the eye began to swell almost immediately and quite horrendously.
To his credit, Berto again beat the count and engaged in a phone booth brawl with Guerrero over the course of the next ten rounds. As Guerrero controlled the action from the inside, Berto had some success, particularly with right uppercuts and hooks to the body. Late in the fight, a Berto uppercut ripped Guerrero under the right eye which began to swell badly, nearly closing shut. With Berto’s own two eyes nearly shut, the two continued slugging it out to the approval of the raucous crowd at Citizens Business Bank Arena. At the end of the night, fans had witnessed one of the best fights of 2012, as Guerrero walked away with scores of 116-110 from all three judges to retain his title, calling out Mayweather after the fight.
