Guillermo Rigondeaux to fight on Cotto-Canelo card
- Updated: November 15, 2015
The top super bantamweight in boxing will be fighting on the Cotto vs Canelo pay-per-view on November 21.
Guillermo Rigondeaux (15-0, 10 KO) has officially signed to Jay Z’s Roc Nation and is set to face Drian Francisco (28-3-1, 22 KO). The fight is replacing the recently cancelled co-headliner between Andre Ward and Alexander Brand, according to ESPN.
The fight will be the second bout on the televised PPV card as the junior lightweight title fight between Francisco Vargas and Takashi Miura has been elevated to the co-main event.
Despite his standing among most as the top 126-pounder in the sport, Rigondeaux has had trouble finding a fight. He last fought in December of 2014 on New Year’s Eve, stopping Hisashi Amagasa in Japan.
Now signed to Roc Nation, Rigondeaux should get the opportunity to fight more often.
“We are thrilled to add Guillermo Rigondeaux, one of boxing’s best pound-for-pound fighters, to what we believe is the biggest night in boxing this year,” David Itskowitch, COO of Roc Nation Sports’ boxing division, said. “On Nov. 21, fans at the Mandalay Bay Events Center and those watching at home on HBO Pay-Per-View are in store for an event that will bring them even more bang for their buck with the addition of Rigondeaux versus Drian Francisco. It’s a rare treat when three of boxing’s top 10 pound-for-pound best fighters appear on the same telecast.”
While the announcement was sudden, a week before the event, Rigondeaux has been training and staying in shape for a potential fight.
“While I’ve been sidelined for the past year, I am grateful for the opportunity to deliver a show to all the boxing fans that have supported me throughout this journey, and I look forward to delivering my best come fight night,” Rigondeaux said.
