Bernard Hopkins is truly a throwback fighter who takes on all challenges. At the age of 49, he is now set to take on one of boxing’s most feared punchers in Sergey Kovalev.

The bout will take place in November, just two months away from Hopkins’ 50th birthday. He is as confident as ever that he will take Kovalev’s belt.

“Everything I do at this point in my career affects my legacy,” Hopkins (55-6-2, 32 KOs) said. “I’ve set and broken many records, but becoming the oldest undisputed light heavyweight world champion is the goal and Kovalev stands in the way of that goal. He’s another young, hungry fighter and just like the ones that came before him, he will leave the ring beltless.”

Kovalev has long been avoided by the top fighters in the light heavyweight division, so it came as a surprise to him when he found out Hopkins was willing to fight him. While he respects Hopkins for taking the fight, Kovalev will be looking to knock out the future Hall of Famer.

“I respect Bernard Hopkins for taking this fight,” said the 31-year-old Kovalev (25-0-1, 23 KOs). “When I came to America, it was dream to fight the best and now I am fighting, I have my chance. He says he is alien. He punch, I punch, then we see who is gonna go to Mars.”

Hopkins is coming off an April victory over another hard puncher in Beibut Shumenov where he became the oldest fighter to win a world title.

Kovalev was in action just last Saturday where he came back from a flash knockdown to blast Blake Caparello and successfully defend his WBO title with a 2nd round TKO.

The fight will represent a reunion of sorts as Golden Boy Promotions will put the fight on HBO. The company had recently been putting on events exclusively on Showtime for a long period of time.
