Johnny Tapia documentary coming to HBO
- Updated: November 7, 2014
Known for his exciting style inside the ring and crazy life outside the ring, the late Johnny Tapia is getting a documentary that will explore his personal achievements as well as some of the demons he battled with in life.
Tapia had a tremendous career that included world titles in three different weight classes. However, his life outside of the ring was a whole different animal. The New Mexico fighter dealt with many personal issues such as jail time and drug overdoses. He passed away from a heart attack in 2012 at the age of 45.
“TAPIA” is executive produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and promoter Lou DiBella.
“This is not a boxing film, but a film about tragedy, triumph, demons and redemption,” says DiBella. “Johnny gives us an honest assessment of his strengths and frailties; he reminds us of the power and resiliency of the human spirit.”
The documentary will debut on Tuesday, Dec. 16 (11:00 p.m.-midnight ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.
