Lopez-Vargas added to Canelo-Lara undercard
- Updated: May 5, 2014
As the promotional tour for Canelo vs Lara is set to get underway, another fight was announced for the July 12 card at the MGM Grand.
In a battle of Mexico vs Puerto Rico, Francisco Vargas will take on Juan Manuel Lopez in a 130-lb title eliminator bout.
Although he’s only 30 years old, Lopez (34-3, 31 KO) has looked shopworn, getting knocked out twice in his last five fights against Mikey Garcia and Orlando Salido. He did bounce back from the Garcia knockout with a KO of his own against Daniel Ponce De Leon in a crazy fight that featured both men knocking each other down in the second round.
Vargas (19-0-1, 13 KO) is fighting on a Canelo undercard for the second-straight time. On the Canelo-Angulo card, he earned a unanimous decison victory over Abner Cotto. Vargas also had a shutout unanimous decison victory over Jerry Belmontes in December of 2013.
Lopez and Vargas will both head to Puerto Rico to participate in the finale of the four-city press tour for Canelo-Lara. The winner of this bout will become the mandatory challenger to Mikey Garcia’s WBO super featherweight championship.
