Martinez to face Cotto on June 7
- Updated: February 20, 2014
Fight fans are in for quite the treat on June 7, as middleweight champ Sergio Martinez will defend his crown against former three-division titlist Miguel Cotto at Madison Square Graden in New York City.
The two sides had been negotiating for months, and while it was assumed that the fight would get made, it was great to see the fight become official today, which will air on HBO PPV.
According to ESPN.com, the fight will be contested at a catchweight of 159 pounds, just one pound under the middleweight limit.  Surely the catchweight will assist Cotto, who has been fighting at junior middleweight, though Martinez is considered a small middleweight and should have no problem coming in at that weight.
Cotto, 33, will also look to make history as he’ll attempt to become the first Puerto Rican fighter to win a world title in four divisions, while Martinez, who is coming off of knee surgery, will attempt to continue his reign at the top of the 160-pound division.
Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KOs) is coming off of a close decision win over Martin Murray last April in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Cotto (38-4, 31 KOs) is fresh off an impressive knockout win over Delvin Rodriguez, having teamed up with Freddie Roach for that fight.
