Mayweather announces Berto fight for September 12

Mayweather-Berto

Update: Showtime has just announced the particulars for the September 12 fight, as All Access: Mayweather vs. Berto will premiere on August 28.  In addition, two of the undercard bouts have been revealed, as Orlando Salido will try to regain his junior lightweight title against Roman Martinez, who dethroned him earlier this year.  In addition, Badou Jack will take on George Groves in defense of his super middleweight belt.

The Mayweather-Berto fight will be the sixth and final fight of Floyd’s contract with Showtime.

“I’m ready to get back in the ring on September 12 and prove again to the whole world why I’m ‘The Best Ever,’” said Mayweather. “I always bring my A-game and this fight against Andre Berto is no exception. He’s a young, strong fighter who is hungry to take down the best. Forty-eight have tried before and on September 12, I’m going to make it 49.”

“I’m coming to kick Floyd’s ass on September 12,” added Berto. “Best believe that I plan to bring it to Floyd and I’m not concerned about what 48 other fighters have been unable to do. Somebody is getting knocked out and it won’t be me. You don’t want to miss this.”

The PPV is also slated to begin at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m.

Original: Floyd Mayweather took to Instagram moments ago to officially announce his September 12 fight.

Mayweather will be taking on former welterweight titlist Andre Berto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, with the fight set to be on Showtime PPV.

There were plenty of rumors in recent weeks that Mayweather would indeed face Berto, with Berto also hinting at the fight via Twitter with cryptic messages and photos of himself in training camp.

Despite the other rumor that the fight would potentially land on CBS, it won’t be the case.

Floyd is coming off of his lopsided decision win over Manny Pacquiao while Berto has won two straight since back-to-back losses against Robert Guerrero and Jesus Soto Karass.  Berto decisioned Steve Chambers and scored a stoppage win over Josesito Lopez in his last bout.
