Mayweather vs. Pacquiao official for May 2
- Updated: February 20, 2015
After years of failed negotiations and the belief that the two would never meet in the ring, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will finally go head to head on May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
While it was believed a few days ago that the two sides had agreed to all points of the contract, Mayweather today made the announcement via the Shots app, which included a photo of the signed contract from both he and Pacquiao.
“I am glad my decision to meet with Manny and discuss making this fight happen helped get the deal done,” said Mayweather in an official statement. “Giving the fans what they want to see is always my main focus. This will be the biggest event in the history of the sport. Boxing fans and sports fans around the world will witness greatness on May 2. I am the best ever, TBE, and this fight will be another opportunity to showcase my skills and do what I do best, which is win. Manny is going to try to do what 47 before him failed to do, but he won’t be successful. He will be number 48.”
The fight, which will be co-promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Top Rank, will be televised on HBO/Showtime PPV, though a price point has not yet been determined, according to both networks.
“I am very happy that Floyd Mayweather and I can give the fans the fight they have wanted for so many years,” Pacquiao said. “They have waited long enough and they deserve it. It is an honor to be part of this historic event. I dedicate this fight to all the fans who willed this fight to happen and, as always, to bring glory to the Philippines and my fellow Filipinos around the world.”
“Everyone involved, including Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, knows this fight simply had to happen,” said Stephen Espinoza of Showtime. “All of us are thrilled to be able to deliver this event to boxing fans around the world. Now, for the second time under his current deal with Showtime Networks, Floyd Mayweather has agreed to fight an opponent that many people thought he’d never face. We set an all-time pay-per-view record with the first event back in September 2013, and we look forward to another record-breaking performance on May 2.”
Though many remained skeptical about the fight ever happening, even after it was known that negotiations were underway, it wasn’t until Mayweather and Pacquiao met by chance at a Miami Heat NBA game, that things appeared to get real serious. After the two met during the game, Pacquiao invited Mayweather to his hotel room to discuss the fight further.
“Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather have been the two most prominent fighters in the sport of boxing for the past decade, and fight fans around the world have been clamoring for them to face each other. And now, on May 2nd, in what everyone believes will be the biggest boxing event of all-time, fight fans have been granted their wish,” added Ken Hershman of HBO. “May 2nd will be a signature moment for the sport of boxing and HBO Sports is thrilled to be a part of this spectacular event. I know the fighters and their teams will be primed to excel and we plan to work closely with everyone involved to deliver the same level of performance from a broadcast perspective.”
According to Espinoza, the announce team has not yet been determined, but will include folks from both networks, and it’s believed that Al Bernstein and Jim Lampley will head up the team.
Clearly the two best fighters of the current era, fight fans will finally see who really is the best, when the two meet in what will undoubtedly be the biggest fight of all-time, particularly in terms of financial ramifications.
The fight, according to HBO, will be at 147 pounds, and all three titles will be on the line.
