Looking to become a world champion once again, Nonito Donaire will get that opportunity when he takes on Simpiwe Vetyeka May 31 in China.
After suffering the second loss of his career against Guillermo Rigondeaux last April, Donaire (32-2, 21 KO) got a bounce-back ninth round TKO victory against Vic Darchinyan in a fight that proved to be tougher than expected for “The Filipino Flash.”
Donaire, will now attempt to win a title in his fourth weight division when he takes on Vetyeka, according to ESPN.com, with Vetyeka making the first defense of his title. Vetyeka upset Chris John on Dec. 6 to win a featherweight title and the clash will be aired in the U.S. on HBO2.
“We’re going to increase the number of cards we are going to do in Asia and we can’t have Zou Shiming on every card,” Arum told ESPN. “So now we have to build up interest in other fighters. Donaire will have a big following since it’s only an hour and five minutes by plane from Manila to Macau and there are regular flights. There’s also a big Filipino population in Macau and in Hong Kong.”
