Porter annihilates Malignaggi in 4
- Updated: April 19, 2014
It was expected to be a competitive contest between IBF welterweight titlist Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KOs) and former champ Paulie Malignaggi (33-7, 7 KOs), but it was anything but, as Porter laid out a beating that puts Malignaggi’s future in question.
Porter picked his spots in the opening round, but in round two, stunned Malignaggi and had him in serious trouble. In the third, Porter simply unloaded and punished Malignaggi from pillar to post, though he was unable to put him down.
However in the fourth, Porter dished out heavier damage as he floored Malignaggi after a barrage of power punches. Malignaggi got to his feet but continued eating blows and a follow-up barrage sent him down for the count.
After the fight, Malignaggi said he would consider retirement, which may be a good idea considering the amount of damage he took and a cushy job as a fight analyst on Showtime (of which he’s quite good at).
In the opening bout, WBO middleweight titlist Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) scored a unanimous decision win over Lukas Konecny (50-5, 23 KOs), who looked befuddled for twelve long rounds. Scores 120-108, 119-109, 119-109.
