Jesse Vargas handed Sadam Ali the first loss of his career on Saturday night with a ninth round TKO at the DC Armory in Washington, D.C.

The fight was pretty competitive from the start as Ali (22-1, 13 KOs) came out aggressively, looking to land hard hooks and right crosses.  Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) for his part kept landing his jab and left hooks, as swelling began to form around the right eye of Ali by the middle rounds.

At the end of the eighth round, Vargas landed a crushing right hand that sent Ali down.  Ali got up slowly but was ultimately saved by the bell.  Then in the ninth, Vargas went for the kill as he hurt Ali again and then dropped him for the second time.

“I tore him apart piece by piece,” Vargas said after the fight. “I was patient. I looked for openings and when I had the openings I fired the shots. This is what I have been working for all my life since I was eigth-years-old. Now I’m a two-time world champion.”

Ali got up slowly but was stopped moments later after a barrage from Vargas.   After the fight, Vargas said he would like a rematch with Timothy Bradley.

“Before the fight I felt really strong,” Ali said. “I felt very confident and sometimes that isn’t enough. I need to go back to the drawing board and make sure to correct the mistakes that I made in the ring tonight. I’m going to come back better than ever.”
