Rafael Marquez Returns on May 5

The illustrious career of Rafael Marquez (40-7, 36 KOs) will continue. The former Bantamweight and Super Bantamweight champion, who participated in an epic four part series with Israel Vazquez in which the men both men accumulated two victories, is not content with retiring on the laurels of his career, and will continue to fight following a defeat in October against titlist Toshiaki Nishioka.

Next Saturday, he’ll make his return to the ring in Tijuana, Mexico, fighting in the co-feature to a women’s title fight. His opponent will be former world title challenger Kenichi Yamaguchi (17-2-2, 4 KOs). His opponent indicates that this is not simply an attempt at collecting a paycheck but that Marquez still believes he’s capable of collecting another world title as Yamaguchi is ranked by several organizing bodies.

Marquez first rose to fame by taking two victories from Mark “Too Sharp” Johnson, a perennial fixture on many lb-for-lb lists, and parlayed that success into a lengthy title reign. His four fights with Vazquez were hellacious wars which accumulated several Fight of the Year honors and tied both men’s legacies with one another.
