Russell makes quick work of Hyland

Featherweight titlist Gary Russell Jr. (27-1, 16 KOs) was on his game on Saturday night at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.  Russell, who was defending his belt against Patrick Hyland (31-2, 15 KOs), wasted no time in letting his hands go and using his superior hand speed to his advantage.

After a dominant first round, Russell ripped into Hyland with lightning-fast combinations that sent the challenger to the canvas three times in the second round, before the fight was finally waved off.

After the fight, Russell said he wanted a rematch with Vasyl Lomanchenko at whatever weight Lomanchenko ended up at.

In the co-feature, Jose Pedraza (22-0, 12 KOs) outworked and decisioned Stephen Smith (23-2, 13 KOs) to retain his junior lightweight title. Pedraza had some issues figuring out Smith in the early going but began to take control about midway through the fight.

In the ninth round, Pedraza scored a knockdown with a right hand that all but ensured victory.  Scores were 117-110, 116-111, and 116-111 for Pedraza.
