Team Mayweather has issues with Maidana’s gloves
- Updated: May 3, 2014
A few hours after Friday’s weigh-in, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe threatened to call off Saturday night’s Mayweather vs Maidana fight. The reason: Boxing gloves.
Apparently, Mayweather has problems with a pair of gloves that Maidana planned to wear on fight night, citing issues with the padding. Although Mayweather is upset over the gloves, NSAC chairman Francisco Aguilar has approved the gloves for use in the fight.
Aguilar is ordering that both sides iron the issue out themselves and according to Yahoo! Sports, Leonard Ellerbe walked out of a meeting with Maidana’s camp uttering the words, “No fight.”
Even though this startling news has occured less than 24 hours away from the event, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer has no worries and expects the two sides to work something out.
“The camps are discussing the gloves,” Schaefer said in his statement. “It is not a commission issue. The camps are still talking about it now, but everything will be worked out. Both guys want to fight. I’m not concerned about this issue.”
One interesting bit of info that Kevin Iole points out in the article is that Miguel Cotto wore the same gloves that Mayweather has issues with in their fight. If you recall that bout, Floyd got touched up pretty good. He even got his nose busted up by Cotto.
It would certainly be something unprecedented to see a fight fall through this close to the start time and it’s highly unlikely that Mayweather would pass up a monster payday, but we’ll just have to wait and see for now.
