Top Rank has announced a new partnership with truTV, who will air a new Friday night boxing series, which debuts on May 1 from The Chelsea inside the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. The debut will highlight some of Top Rank’s younger stars one day before the welterweight mega-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.
The inaugural card will see Takahiro Ao (27-3-1, 16 KOs) take on Ray Beltran (29-7-1, 17 KOs) in a 12-round bout for a vacant lightweight title. The undercard will include two undefeated fighters in action – Mikael Zewski (26-0, 23 KOs) against Konstantin Ponomarev (27-0, 13 KOs) in a 10-round welterweight bout.
According to Top Rank, the truTV series will air on three consecutive weeks in May, all airing one day before an HBO televised card. Five additional cards will air throughout the remainder of 2015.
“Partnering with Turner Sports and truTV for a new and unique boxing series will further invigorate and grow the sport,” said Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank. “Additionally, the collaboration between the HBO and truTV programming will help develop and expose current and future champions and world-rated contenders to a broad audience with consistency.”
“Everybody at HBO is thrilled to see a new platform for live coverage of professional boxing being launched by a bold and creative network such as truTV,” said Ken Hershman, president of HBO Sports. “We congratulate Top Rank and Turner Sports on this new initiative. We look forward to lending our support to this important new franchise that will clearly benefit the sport, the fighters and the fans from day one of the series’ debut.”
Tickets for the May 1 card are already on sale and are priced at $50, $75, 85 and $100.
