Andre Ward (30-0, 15 KOs) thoroughly dominated Alexander Brand on Saturday night in Oakland, Calif., as he looked to punch his ticket to a November showdown with light heavyweight champ Sergey Kovalev.
Ward, who was fighting for the second time in 2016, looked very sharp, showing no signs of rust, unlike his fight earlier this year against Sullivan Barrera. Using a stiff jab and quick overhand right, Ward consistently touched Brand to the body while making himself a very difficult target to hit.
Brand looked uncomfortable for most of the fight as he threw inaccurate hooks, losing his balance on a number of occasions. During the eighth and ninth rounds, Ward picked up the pace as he was clearly looking to end the fight; connecting with big right hands and left hooks, but Brand’s chin kept him from getting in trouble.
After twelve lopsided rounds, Ward was awarded the unanimous decision with scores of 120-108 from all three judges.
